The Difference Between Traditional "Restorative Yoga" and Functionally Safe Movement

When many people hear the term "restorative yoga," a very specific image comes to mind: lying or seated on a mat in a restful position surrounded by heavy bolsters, pillows, blocks, and blankets. Traditional restorative yoga is often a deeply meditative practice that uses these added physical supports to help you relax comfortably on the ground.


However, my approach to restorative practice at Flowforward is a little different. While I don't use the giant bolsters and blankets typical of traditional restorative yoga classes, I believe in a practice that is restorative in a functional, practical sense.

To me, true restoration isn't just about avoiding the "wrong" exercises that could cause harm. It is an incredibly positive process of modifying and adapting postures to meet your specific physical conditions so that you can practice successfully. Instead of focusing on your limitations, we adapt the movements to actively support your physical and mental well-being.


For example, if you come to class with a shoulder condition—like a rotator cuff injury or a frozen shoulder—forcing your arm straight up generally causes pain and aggravates the injury.  Instead, I will guide you to place your fingers on your shoulder, whether lying down, seated or standing, and gently externally rotate the arm. This alternative puts your arm in a safe position, allowing you to build strength and mobility over time without pain.


Protecting the knees is another big consideration. Instead of a traditional kneeling lunge, we adapt. You might use a towel or a rolled-up mat for extra cushion. If being on your knees is not an option, you can easily use a chair. True restoration is about finding the right movement for your body.


Knowing your history gives me the foundation to tailor your experience, which is why I ask health questions when you register for your first class. 


At Flowforward, true restoration isn't just about resting on pillows. It is about moving safely, building resilience, and ensuring your yoga practice honors your unique body so you can walk out of class feeling empowered, thinking, "I did that!"
